My journey from Trainee teacher
Deputy Headteacher and TEAL Safeguarding Lead
Having always had a keen interest in science, I soon realised when I got to secondary school that my passion lay with chemistry. I had a great chemistry teacher who was able to make even the driest topics really interesting and engaging. It was due to his enthusiasm and inspiration that at age 13 I decided that I wanted to be a chemistry teacher, making a difference and inspiring the next generation of chemists.
32 years ago, I was lucky enough to be placed at Driffield School to train as a chemistry teacher in a new style of teacher training course called the Article Teacher Scheme. I worked 4 days a week at Driffield and completed my PGCE one day a week at York University. Once qualified, I was so proud to be offered a full-time post at Driffield School and have never looked back. I am still extremely proud to be part of Driffield School.
I have been very lucky to have had access to many great opportunities and have enjoyed a range of different roles during my career, including chemistry teacher, Head of Key Stage 3 science, Head of Year, SENDCO, Assistant Head: Inclusion and more latterly Deputy Headteacher; Pastoral and Designated Safeguarding Lead. After so many years of working at Driffield School I couldn’t imagine working elsewhere until Driffield School joined TEAL 8 years ago.
The beauty of working for a MAT like TEAL is the opportunity to work across schools and phases sharing great practice and providing mutual support for colleagues in similar schools working in similar areas. I have had the opportunity to make connections with so many amazing and talented members of staff that wouldn’t have been possible without our close Trust working. It was through this work that I became interested in the possibility of sharing some of my experiences and expertise more formally and was delighted to be offered the role of TEAL Safeguarding Lead, supporting a fantastic group of Designated Safeguarding Leads across our schools.
There is no doubt that a career in teaching and pastoral care can be very demanding and at times challenging. However, I have thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of my career, particularly the variety of roles and opportunities that have been available. TEAL is an amazing Trust to work for, with a fabulous group of colleagues. TEAL not only provides opportunities for staff to grow and progress, but they also ensure all staff are fully always supported and make sure each and every one of us feels valued. I certainly wouldn’t want to work anywhere else.
